When You Pray pt 2 (or A Life of Prayer pt 8 )

31 Dec

Yesterday I described our prayers as being a two-way conversation. I like that. Let’s say you have a parent or a close friend who you really respect, and you go to them with a concern or a problem of some sort, you don’t have any hesitation talking to them, do you? You don’t consider making a phone call to them pointless, do you? (more…)

Who’s Your Daddy? pt 2 of 2 (or A Life of Prayer pt 6 )

16 Dec

Yesterday I was talking about recognizing Yehoveh as your Father and I began to think about that time with Jesus’ disciples asked Him to teach them how to pray. He looks at them and says, “Your Father knows what you need before you ask, so pray something like this: ‘Our Father who is in heaven, may your name be honored . . .” (Matthew 6:8-9) [Other translations render that, "Hallowed be your name . . ."] Then He went on to give them what we call the “Lord’s Prayer.” (more…)

Who’s Your Daddy? pt 1 of 2 (or A Life of Prayer pt 5)

Years ago I used to hear ministers and teachers try to compare the relationship between your Heavenly Father and your “earthly” father, saying that if you had a poor relationship with your dad, you would have difficulties relating to your Heavenly Father. (more…)

More Thoughts on Prayer (or A Life of Prayer pt 4)

30 Oct

As you know, I admire men of faith; men who are willing to do great things for our Father and are able to freely give Him the credit. Although, I wasn’t surprised to hear how some of the greatest men of faith . . . also dealt with some great failures and weaknesses. In fact, even some of the greatest examples of faith in the Churches history admitted to be dissatisfied in, for instance, their prayer lives! That is shocking! (more…)

A Life of Prayer (pt 3)

When I was sharing that message from Ravenhill, I explained that his writings had truly impacted my walk of faith in the area of prayer. Oh, I am not an expert in prayer and I have no allusions that I am another “Ravenhill,” or anything. Like I have shared, he was known to pray for 6 hours every day. Now whether that was completely accurate or not I don’t know, sometimes claims like that tend to get exaggerated. I mean in my own life I am fortunate to pray 15 minutes a day. (more…)

Regarding Prayer . . . (or A Life of Prayer pt 2)

11 Oct

I want to talk about praying . . . strange subject, I know, and I am certainly not the most proficient “prayer” in the congregation, but I have learned a few things.

There was a time when I would go to “prayer meetings,” just so I could learn the “secrets” of praying. I wanted “pray with effect.” In other words, if I was going to pray, I wanted to know that my Father would bother to listen to them. (more…)

A Life of Prayer

Yes, I am back in the Hospital planning on another heart catherization, this time they will add the needed stents. Oh well, I am well enough to write to you, but it also gives me an opportunity to pray, and hopefully to pray with someone while I am here. I figure I may as well take advantage of every opportunity I find to share the message of Christ. (more…)

The Privilege of Prayer

17 Mar

The Word of God is alive. Sometimes you can read a text you have read several times before, and suddenly it comes alive for you. That happens to me often. Recently I was reading the 7th chapter of Matthew and verses 7-8 caught my eyes: (more…)
