A Tender Heart

The Lord wants to give each of us a “heart of flesh” so we will be pliable and responsive to Him. When we are touched by the finger of God, a tender heart gives way to the pressures in our life and assumes the form He desires, similar to a lump of clay that allows the potter to determine the shape of the vessel.

I will sprinkle you with clean water, and you will be clean and acceptable to me. I will wash away everything that makes you unclean. I will take away your stubborn heart and give you a new heart and a desire to be faithful. You will have only pure thoughts, because I will put my Spirit in you and make you eager to obey my laws and teachings. You will once again live in the land I gave your ancestors; you will be my people, and I will be your God -Ezekiel 36:25-28

To help the Lord in this process, God gave the Holy Spirit to us and brings to life that ability to respond to Him. By yielding to the Spirit’s promptings our heart becomes increasingly tender and sensitive to His leading. It takes time and patience on our part, but the Lord is able to give us a greater understanding of His Word, and to soft heart, because it has faithfully accepted and obeyed previous teachings.Any resistance to God will slowly ebb and harden our hearts. But as we become comfortable with His presence and to intimacy with Him (which is the result of our submission to Him) we will be quick to deal with sin and return to the place of obedience and blessing.

People with tender hearts stay closely connected to the body of Christ; they try to build up and encourage others in their walk of faith. Believers like this are not only receptive to what God wants to tell them; they are also teachable. They are willing to listen and be corrected by others.

So this week when you read your Bible and pray, let your heart be soft toward the words of God. As He pokes His finger into each hard area, listen to His instructions; rely on the Spirit’s power to help you yield and obey. Let Him shape you into a beautiful and useful vessel.

Father, I rejoice and thank you that I have been sprinkled with clean, Redemptive water; that I am now acceptable to you. You have washed away everything that made me unclean. You have taken away my rebellious, stubborn heart and given me a new heart that desire to be faithful and to honor only you. You have put your Spirit in me and I am eager to obey everything you teach me. I rejoice that you have drawn me into your Kingdom and I will always praise you. With all my heart I will praise your wonder and glorify you throughout eternity. I will honor you and celebrate your great name.
