We have been discussing the two “edges,” of the “Doubled-Edged” Sword. One aspect of this we haven’t discussed is how one edge strips off what is false, but it also unveils what is true. When we are finally able to take a good look at ourselves, then we will discover the marvelous, healing, wholesome, comforting, sweet, delivering Word, that will allow us, as it did young Christian, to gird up our loins, and to address ourselves to our Journey. It will show us, how every provision we will ever need is found in Christ. We won’t have to go on fighting a battle that is already lost, but we can step out into the glorious experience of a victory that is already won! And what will we discover? Well, look at Verse 13:
No creature can hide from God. Everything is uncovered and exposed for him to see. We must answer to him (Hebrews 4:13)
That my friends is where we need to be! Do you remember when Adam sinned, he hid from God. Why? Because he realized he was naked and he was ashamed. Then Yahweh fashioned clothes for him, to cover our first parents. However, when all pretense is stripped off, and we see ourselves for what we are, and by faith have appropriated what Christ is; when we believe that he not only died for us, but rose again to live in us; when we realize that we not only need him for what he did, but also for what he is; then we can stand again before God exactly as we are, naked without need of façades, masks, or pretenses — but we will no longer need to hide from Him, nor be ashamed.
We will be exactly what we are, that is all, just sinners saved by grace, with nothing to defend, nothing that we must hide, nothing that cannot be fully exposed to everyone. We will discover a wonderful lifting of burdens, a wonderful freedom, a wonderful release — we have finally entered into rest. Because we are what we are before our God, we can be exactly what we are before men.
Some of you may have been in the wilderness a long, long time — too long. And somehow you have missed this promised period of rest. Well, even if you have been living in the wilderness of self effort for many years, you can die to your unbelief and leave the carcass of unbelief and self-sufficiency behind. Lift up your hands and praise your King! Like the new generation born in the wilderness, just follow your heavenly Joshua into the land that He has promised you!
But you need to know, you cannot crucify your flesh. Yahweh has already done that. However, you can agree to it. When you do, you will discover this priceless gift of peace — of rest. Then again, if you refuse, knowing what to do but not willing to do it, the living death that marks your fruitless, self-centered, so-called “Christian” life, will become the tombstone of a phony faith, a faith that never really was, a house built on the sand. When the floods and storms of life strike, you will be swept to destruction. Difficult realities to face, but you ignore them to your own detriment.
With these Morning Messages, I take you on guided tours to, as Bunyan described, the Celestial City. At times we linger at corners familiar and unseen. And explore the depths of our faith along the way.
The trail is long, but there’s no hurry. Though we do need to stock up on supplies for the way, and that’s where I need your help. If you enjoy these messages, please consider becoming a contributing member of this tour group. It will be very much appreciated.
