Let’s continue our look at the tenth chapter of John’s Gospel. We have seen that the “sheep” were gathered for the night in the “sheepfold,” which was guarded by an “under-shepherd,” or “gatekeeper.” We also saw that in the morning, the shepherd came to retrieve his sheep. As he called out to them, the sheep looked up, because they recognized that voice! Then, we see that the shepherd takes them out:
After he has brought out all his sheep, he walks ahead of them. The sheep follow him because they recognize his voice. They won’t follow a stranger. Instead, they will run away from a stranger because they don’t recognize his voice” (John 10:4-5)
Once again, we see a contrast between experience, and the Scriptures. Let’s be honest, okay? All of us have heard stories about believers who heard the wrong voice and have been led into error. Maybe you are one of them. Look, we can either say anyone who was lead astray by a “foreign” voice was not a true sheep, in the first place. Or, we have to admit that because our God speaks to our spirits, we are going to mess up. Why? Because we expect it to be in our mind. The problem is that our enemy speaks to our minds. And he speaks to our minds with Thoughts, Ideas, and Suggestions (T.I.S). But we are to take those “Thoughts, Ideas, and Suggestions” captive and make them obedient to Christ!
Eventually, we have to learn that we have become new people and our new person is continually renewed in its knowledge to be like its Creator, and that we now have the mind of Christ! (I Corinthians 2:16, Colossians 3:10). Not only that, we have been anointed so all of us have knowledge and are able to hear His Voice! Our born-again spirits will never listen to the voice of a stranger, but our minds sure will! So, if we will simply walk in the spirit, we would never fulfill what our mind is telling us to do!
The Spirit of God is devoted to an effort to persuade people to alter their ways and bring their lives into harmony with the Heart and Desires of our Father! It won’t do us any good if we simply know these things. Our theories and theological understanding is useless unless we seek to apply it to our walk of faith! All of my arguments and urgings mean nothing, if you simply delete the emails, or actually read them and say, “Well, that was interesting.” If you don’t stop and pray, “Father, in all of these messages I keep hearing challenges to know you and to actually have you change my life . . . but frankly, I haven’t noticed any change. Please, what do I need to do? Allow your Spirit to teach me and help be discover this life!”
That, my friend, is where you need to start!
