John’s Insights

I wanted to share some John’s great insights from his first letter:

Everyone who believes that Yeshua/Jesus is the Messiah has been born from God (I John 5:1a)

Whoa, wait. It seems to imply that if you do not believe, you are not born from God. What about the Universal Fatherhood of God? That’s right, it doesn’t exist. Yahweh only knows two groups of people. His people, the Hebrews, and those who are not his people, those who are not Hebrews, are Gentiles. The Hebrews are His chosen people. However, anyone who has accepted His offer to follow His Son, are then reborn and grafted into His family. They are not step-children nor simply tag-alongs. They are His children, adopted and complete!

Everyone who loves the Father also loves his children (I John 5:1b)

If you have joined your allegiance to His appointed Redeemer, and you have been re-born into His family, it is presumed, that you also love your brothers and sisters. If you don’t, then maybe, you haven’t received the spirit of His family?

We know that we love God’s children when we love God by obeying his commandments (I John 5:2)

Whoa! Obeying His commands? Isn’t that legalism? No. It isn’t. Because you love your Father, you are motivated to follow his instructions. Your obedience is the fruit of your love for Him.

To love God means that we obey his commandments. Obeying his commandments isn’t difficult because everyone who has been born from God has won the victory over the world (I John 5:3-4a)

Isn’t that what I just said? We serve and obey Him because we love Him. And because we love our God, we have been born from Him, and because we have been born from Him, we have already won the victory over the world and sin! Amen! Stomp your feet and shout for joy!

Our faith is what wins the victory over the world. Who wins the victory over the world? Isn’t it the person who believes that Yeshua is the Son of God? (I John 5:4b-5)

Oh man! Yes, it is! We need to quit underestimating what was accomplished through the sacrifice of God’s Son on our behalf. We need to quit minimizing its effect on our lives. We have won the victory over the world! The Living Bible renders those verses this way:

[E]very child of God can obey him, defeating sin and evil pleasure [how?] by trusting Christ to help him. But who could possibly fight and win this battle except by believing that Jesus is truly the Son of God? (I John 5:4b-5)

That’s right! Once you believe that Jesus is truly the Son of God, you can fight and WIN! Is that you? Then, by golly, grab hold of the victory and quit whining and complaining.

This Son of God is Yeshua Christ, who came by water (His baptism) and blood (His sacrifice). He didn’t come with water only, but with water and with blood. The Spirit is the one who verifies this, because the Spirit is the truth. There are three witnesses: the Spirit, the water, and the blood. These three witnesses agree (I John 5:6-8)

More literally, it reads: “It is the Holy Spirit Who bears witness, because the Holy Spirit is the Truth!

“So there are three witnesses in heaven: the Father, the Word and the Holy Spirit, and these three are One; and there are three witnesses on the earth: the Spirit, the water, and the blood; and these three are in unison; their testimony coincides.”

I love the cohesion, the unity between them!

We accept human testimony. God’s testimony is greater because it is the testimony that he has given about his Son. Those who believe in the Son of God have the testimony of God in them. Those who don’t believe God have made God a liar. They haven’t believed the testimony that God has given about his Son (I John 5:9-10)

I repeated his previously in another Message, but if you deny that Yahweh gave His Son for your Redemption, you are calling Him a liar. Well, shame of you. You will someday. Just hope it is by choice, rather than by force. But someday you will confess that Jesus is Lord!

This is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is found in his Son. The person who has the Son has this life. The person who doesn’t have the Son of God doesn’t have this life (I John 5:11-12)

There you have it. That is, as Paul refers to it, our Ministry of Reconciliation:

Whoever is a believer in Christ is a new creation. The old way of living has disappeared. A new way of living has come into existence. God has done all this. He has restored our relationship with him through Christ, and has given us this ministry of restoring relationships. In other words, God was using Christ to restore his relationship with humanity. He didn’t hold people’s faults against them, and he has given us this message of restored relationships to tell others. Therefore, we are Christ’s representatives, and through us God is calling you. We beg you on behalf of Christ to become reunited with God. God had Christ, who was sinless, take our sin so that we might receive God’s approval (and be clothed with HIS Righteousness!) through him (II Corinthians 5:17-21)

Hey, those of you who like to stand on the soapbox, in the middle of downtown, have you read these verses? He is not holding people’s sins against them, and He has given us (and that includes those of you on the soapboxes), this message of reconciliation. Do you remember in the old westerns, when they told the guy dying, “Well, ya better make peace with your maker . . .” Nope! Don’t worry about that. He has already made peace with you. Jesus stated, “I didn’t come to condemn you.” No? “No, you are already condemned.” Oh! “You are condemn because you don’t believe in God’s only Son” (John 3:17-18). See, it isn’t your sinful activities and attitudes that will convict you. You are already convicted of them, because you don’t believe in His Son Jesus’ work of Redemption! How do we know? We already answered that. Because you have no love for Jesus or His Father.

In conclusion, I’ve written this to those who believe in the Son of God so that they will know that they have eternal life (I John 5:13)

That’s right. If you have already believed, then relax, because you already have eternal life. More literally, this is saying that you have the very Life and Existence of God Himself. The Zoe Life. As amazing as it may be, it is absolutely true, and we need to live in the reality of it. To bring this out, John continues:

We are confident that God listens to us if we ask for anything that has his approval. We know that he listens to our requests. So we know that we already have what we ask him for (I John 5:14-15)

Wow! So what do we do about that? What do we do with our fellow believers:

If you see another believer committing a sin that doesn’t lead to death, you should pray that God would give that person life. This is true for those who commit sins that don’t lead to death. There is a sin that leads to death. I’m not telling you to pray about that. Every kind of wrongdoing is sin, yet there are sins that don’t lead to death (I John 5:17-17)

The other day I told you about a time with I was involved in deep sin. During that whole period, only one brother took the time and energy to draw me back. I needed that brother because he was willing to help bring me back. Finally, the Holy Spirit broke through and brought me home, again. After that, I reconnected with my brothers and pastor! That dark period is want convinced me that whenever I have the opportunity, I need to help a brother who is lost. I will reach out to them (as long as it takes, by the way).

We know that those who have been born from God don’t go on sinning. Rather, the Son of God protects them, and the evil one can’t harm them.

We know that we are from God, and that the whole world is under the control of the evil one.

We know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding so that we know the real God. We are in the one who is real, his Son Yeshua Christ. This Yeshua Christ is the real God and eternal life.

Dear children, guard yourselves from false gods (I John 5:18-21)
