Today is Thanksgiving, and normally I avoid sending a message that is motivated by the holiday. But you know, giving thanks is what our faith is all about. It is indeed the foundation of our faith. In fact, I will take it even further than that and state that Thanksgiving Day is the only true Christian Holiday.
Think about this. Paul stated, “Just as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so go on living in him — in simple faith. Grow out of him as a plant grows out of the soil it is planted in, becoming more and more sure of the faith as you were taught it, and your lives will overflow with joy and” and now get this, “thankfulness” (Colossians 2:7). That’s right! Our lives should overflow with joy and thankfulness!
Today, as we pause over turkey and stuffing, let’s ponder the good things in life, and show our gratitude to our Father. Again, as Paul assured us, “it is always good to give thanks to God” (I Thessalonians 5:18). After all, he “gives everyone life, breath, and everything they have” (Acts 17:25).
So, as we share our gratitude, begin to fall further in love with your Father. Allow your gratitude to draw you to greater faith in him and greater love for him. We are prone to a wait-and-see kind of gratitude, instead of a see-and-believe kind. So, today, receive God’s grace and plead for more — more of his grace, and more of him.
Throughout scripture, it is clear that gratitude pleases our God:
“How can I repay Yahweh
for all the good that he has done for me?
I will take the cup of salvation
and call on the name of Yahweh.” (Psalm 116:12–13).
Go ahead. Ask Him for more. He is the kind of Father who loves to give good gifts to his kids (Luke 11:13), and he always knows exactly what you need (Matthew 6:32–33).
This Thanksgiving, allow your gratitude to be a window into the storehouses of everything our Father has offered you through Christ. All our Lord’s Spirit lift your eyes in faith above every gift to your all-satisfying, never-failing Father in heaven!
