I often hear that if you had a weak relationship with your earthly father, you would always find it difficult to think of God as your loving Father. That whenever you thought of Yahweh, your vision would always be clouded with the pain of your earthly father or stepfather. Balderdash! I completely disagree.
Still, some claim that thousands of Christians do not believe God loves them because their earthly father abandoned, wounded, or grieved them so much. I don’t agree with that. But if that is what you are dealing with, I pray that this morning’s message will not only speak to those of you who have not yet discovered how deep and wise and broad our Heavenly Father’s love is!
As I stated, I do not accept the premise that our faith and enjoyment of our Father’s love suffers from the weakness of our natural father (or even the lack of a natural father). All we have to do is allow the Holy Spirit to work in our lives to accept how the Scriptures describe our Heavenly Father.
Most of us know the Scriptures and the Theology behind Yahweh’s tremendous love for His children. However, because very few of us have learned to embrace that love, we are not enjoying the benefits of His love.
Listen to how Yahweh described Himself to Moses:
“I am Yahweh, the merciful and gracious God, slow to anger and rich in steadfast love and truth. I show this steadfast love to many thousands by forgiving their sins . . .” (Exodus 34:6-7).
Now, when we are facing a difficult time in our lives, we tend to forget what He said about His nature. But, if we would only believe what He had said, we would have a tremendous amount of comfort and assurance in our hearts. Then the peace which is far from our ability to understand will flood our lives.
From cover to cover, the Scriptures speak to us as Yahweh’s voice, revealing how tender and loving He is; that He is ready to forgive at all times. The Psalmist understood this:
“You, O Adonay, are good and forgiving,
full of mercy toward everyone who calls out to you” (Psalm 86:5).
He is patient with us and full of tenderness and mercy:
“Your acts of compassion are many in number, O Yahweh.
Give me a new life guided by your regulations” (Psalm 119:156).
“Yahweh is merciful, compassionate, patient,
and always ready to forgive” (Psalm 145:8).
When you go to the Lord in prayer and worship, be very careful what kind of image of God you take into His presence! Forget about the failure of your natural father. That has nothing to do with your Heavenly Father. You can become entirely convinced of His love for you and believe that He is all He says He is!
Your history with your physical life has absolutely no bearing on your current life in the Spirit. Paul made it clear that “the standards of the Spirit, who gives life through Christ Yeshua, have set you free from the standards of sin and death. That is your previous life and the failure of those who were supposed to represent Yahweh to you but failed. So, don’t allow your past to dictate your current life.
