Ooh, That Perfect Peace

Many years ago, in one of my teachings, I encouraged everyone to remember that “By faith, the fire within you can burn brighter than any fire that might be raging around you. As Smith Wigglesworth wrote in his book, “Ever-increasing Faith“: ‘There is nothing impossible with God. All the impossibility is with us when we measure God by the limitations of our unbelief.’”

Recently, I remembered that teaching as I reread something Paul wrote to the believers in Philippi:

“Always be joyful in the Lord! I’ll say it again: Be joyful! Let everyone know how considerate you are. The Lord is near. Never worry about anything. But in every situation let God know what you need in prayers and requests while giving thanks. Then God’s peace, which goes beyond anything we can imagine, will guard your thoughts and emotions through Christ Yeshua.

Finally, brothers and sisters, keep your thoughts on whatever is right or deserves praise: things that are true, honorable, fair, pure, acceptable, or commendable. Practice what you’ve learned and received from me, what you heard and saw me do. Then the God who gives this peace will be with you. (Philippians 4:4-9)

Here is how this works. Whenever we face difficult situations, we need to pray! Once you do, the Lord gives you peace. It is just that simple. I am not talking about some “peaceful easy feeling” that makes us say, “Ahh, that’s nice.” No, no! This peace goes way beyond anything The Eagles could sing. It is peace “which goes beyond anything we can imagine.”

Imagine this:, you are facing an extreme difficulty. You earnestly pray about it, and that peace begins to calm you. All of your worries and fears abate. Then some time goes by, and no resolution is in sight. So, you start thinking about the situation and find yourself worrying again. You begin to pray again. It is such a frustrating continuous habit all of us have learned to repeat over and over. Friends, don’t stop praying until that peace returns and settles on your spirit; the peace that knows your Father is in control. It will not desert you and leave you wondering. The peace He provides ends every doubt and calms every fear!

But, there are no shortcuts, here. The only way to find that place of perfect peace is by prayer. Friends, you will no longer worry about anything! You will cease fretting, rubbing your hands together and wondering what you are going to do.

When you pray about everything, you will never worry about anything! When you thank Him for anything, the peace of God which surpasses all understanding will flood your being! It will bypass your understanding; it will bypass your logic. It has nothing to with “logic,” it is spiritual. When your mind is screaming, “Hey, this shouldn’t work. You should be freaking out! This situation is so perilous, so horrible; nothing can solve it,” peace will bring a perfect peace.

Prayer defies logic. Prayer provides the peace of God which surpasses what human understanding and logic can provide. It guards your heart, it keeps your heart at peace, at rest, calm and uncluttered with worry.

As Paul promises, if you have spent your time in prayer, your thoughts will continue to think on “whatever is right or deserves praise: things that are true, honorable, fair, pure, acceptable, or commendable.”

Do you remember in Proverbs where it says, “As a man thinks in his heart, so he is”? You are what you meditate on. You need to get rid of that “Stinkin’ Thinkin’” and start meditating on what is “right, deserves praise, things that are true, honorable, fair pure, acceptable and commendable.” And they only way to maintain that is to be “in prayers and requests while giving thanks.”

If all you focus on are things that are not of a “good report;” if all you are going to think about is, “What if,” “What if,” “What if,” it will plummet you into a bottomless pit of despair. No! Paul instructs us to worry about nothing, to pray about everything, and to thank our God for anything! Thank Him for the parking space you found (sure, you may have to walk, but you found a place, and you might need the exercise. Thank Him); thank Him for your fingers; thank Him for your good health; thank Him for your toes. I am serious, start thanking Him for anything. Thank Him for your spouse (even though they may not be that considerate); thank Him for your parents. Thank Him for anything!

When you thank your Fathe for anything, and you pray about everything, you will, as a result, worry about nothing! Why? Because whenever you pray, the peace of God comes! It is the common cause and effects.

You will find yourself shouting, “What? I have nothing to worry about! My God is so good! My God is so great! My God is merciful! My God is loving! My God is kind! Isaiah 26:3 states, “You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you because he trusts in you.” The Amplified Version expands that as:

You will guard him and keep him in perfect and constant peace whose mind [both its inclination and its character] is stayed on You, because he commits himself to You, leans on You, and hopes confidently in You.
