Seeking Him?

My recent experiences have made realize that I am getting older, sure, but I also don’t recover from illnesses as quickly as I used to. This last bout has dampened the winds in my sais, some. But it has also confirmed how much I need my Father’s presence.

I remember stories told about Leonard Ravenhill, and many “Seminarians” would visit him, seeking his input on their future “ministries.” It is said that he would lean into them, pointing his boney finger, and ask, “Do you know God?” Not, “Do you know about God. But do you know Him?”

If I had ever spent time with Ravenhill and he asked me that, I would have shuddered and replied, “I thought I did. But not anymore. Teach me how.” But alas, all I have are Ravenhill’s writings and, oh, wait! I do have my Father’s Spirit! The same Spirit Ravenhill knew!

That’s right. I can enjoy Ravenhill’s writings (and I do), but the same Spirit that taught Ravenhill, can teach me!

Our Seminaries and Bible Schools do an “okay” job of teaching theories and doctrines about God, but few actually guide the students to know Him!

John described Jesus’ last prayer for us:

“Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son now so that he may bring glory to you, for you have given him authority over all men to give eternal life for all that you have given to him. And this is eternal life, to know you, the only true God, and him whom you have sent—Jesus Christ(John 17:1-3)

The Amplified Version presents an even fuller description:

And this is eternal life: [it means] to know (to perceive, recognize, become acquainted with, and understand) You, the only true and real God, and [likewise] to know Him, Jesus [as the] Christ (the Anointed One, the Messiah), Whom You have sent (John 17:3)

I can study all kinds of books about George Washinton, but I never met the man. I can even respect the honor and disciplines in Washington’s life, but that doesn’t really impact me as much as if I had known him personally.

So, I will take this opportunity to ask you. Do you actually know Yahweh, or simply hear teachings about Him? You read these Messages and others like them, but have they brought you closer to actually know Him, and not more information about Him?

If not, then slow down and get alone with Him. Shut off everything that can distract you: your cell phone, your laptop, your TV. Get all of it out of your sight and reach. Then ask Him to cleanse you from all superficiality, all phoniness. Ask Him to remove everything could turn your attention from Him. As Ravenhill taught, “Your prayer life denotes how much you depend on your own ability, and how much you really believe in your heart when you sing, ‘Nothing in my hands I bring, simply to Thy cross I cling . . .’ The more self- confidence you have, the less you pray. The less self-confidence you have, the more you have to pray.”

This is where it begins, my friends. Not the goal you are hoping to achieve, but where you begin your journey to Him!
